I-GENE project, founded by the European Commission under the FET-OPEN call, aims to develop a technology that allows recognition and editing of a single genetic locus in the 3 billion base pairs of the human genome. By using approaches of nanomedicine and programmable biology, the project would significantly reduce the most prominent limitations to a more widespread application of the CRISPR/Cas9 technology such as targets specificity and efficiency.
The project is coordinated by the Dpt of Biology of the University of Pisa (IT). Partners are the Dpt of Medicine of the University of Pisa (IT), the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and three industrial companies: Prochimia Surfaces (Poland), Lionix (Holland) and Msquared (United Kingdom).
